The Project
Nestled in a small village on the outskirts of Spalding, Lincolnshire, our clients were looking to make the most of the picturesque views that their bungalow benefits from. The team at Austin John were contacted to design plans for a single storey rear extension to offer our clients another living area with large bifold doors to create a seamless boundary between their home and garden.

Conservatory or Sun Room?
Initially the clients had considered installing a conservatory, but these rooms, although visually appealing due to the amount of light they let in, are often not practical for the UK climate. Due to the nature of the glazing in conservatories, not only do these rooms let in light, but on warm days they also let in the heat and can often become unusable for large amounts of time over the summer. Likewise in the winter months due to the lack of insulation these rooms can become too cold to enjoy.
We proposed a single storey rear extension with 4 Velux roof windows, 2 sets of bifold doors and a high-level window to provide light to come in from all angles. With the benefit of sufficient installation in the room, we were able to create a lovely, usable area in which there is light in abundance, with the ability to keep control of the temperature of the room itself too.

Designing single storey sunrooms such as these offers homeowners a light, airy space directly bordering either gardens or patio areas to create the feel of outdoor living areas on warm, sunny days (which unfortunately we do not see a lot of in England!), but also there is the benefit of another living area which can still provide comfort and warmth in the winter.

If you think that your home would benefit from a single storey rear extension to create the sunroom or extra living area that you have been dreaming of, contact us today for free, impartial advice on your project.
